A tracksuit dresses up when the cloth is heavy enough to hold its shape and nothing else you are wearing looks like sportswear: leather shoes instead of runners, a structured coat, a flat matte colour, a fit that follows the body. Most of the work is subtraction. Every sports signal you remove, the drawstring hanging out, the running shoe, the cap, the chest logo, moves the outfit towards smart.
Which tracksuits can be dressed up?
Not all of them, and the cloth decides it before styling gets a chance. A set that creases the moment you sit down will not look smart in any shoes.
- Weight: heavy cotton, roughly 400 GSM and up, hangs in a straight line. Light jersey clings, wrinkles and reads as loungewear across a room.
- Finish: matte and dry-handed, like brushed cotton or a dense loopback. A high-shine technical face throws light like activewear.
- Fit: a straight or tapered leg that breaks once on the shoe, and a jacket ending at the hip bone. Very wide legs and cropped jackets are a strong look, but a streetwear one.
- Detail: plain, or embroidery close in colour to the base. Contrast piping, side stripes and printed logos pull the set towards the pitch.
- Condition: no bobbling on the seat, no stretched cuffs. Dressing up is unforgiving of a tired garment in a way jeans are not.
What shoes take a tracksuit up a level?
Footwear does more than anything else here, because it is where the eye checks whether you meant it. Leather, with as little visible cushioning as possible.
- Leather sneakers: low, clean and minimal, in white, black or brown. The safest step up, and it works with any set.
- Loafers: penny or horsebit, with a short sock or none. Soft cloth against a hard polished shoe is the point, so keep the hem touching the vamp.
- Chelsea or derby boots: better in winter and with a wider leg, because the shaft fills the space the hem leaves.
- What to avoid: chunky runners, football trainers and slides, which keep the outfit where it started.
What to wear over a tracksuit

- A wool overcoat: the most effective piece here. Knee length in camel, charcoal or navy, worn open.
- Leather or suede: a straight bomber or a cafe racer adds hardness without formality, which suits an evening.
- An unstructured blazer: wool or corduroy, over the tracksuit trousers, with the jacket of the set left at home.
- A long cardigan: softer than a coat, easier indoors, and tonal if you stay in one colour family.
Accessories and layering
Under the zip jacket, a collared shirt or a fine merino crew is worth more than any accessory, because a collar sitting above the zip gives the neckline something to hold. Past that, restraint: a watch on leather or steel, a little silver, a soft bag rather than a rucksack. Tuck the drawstring inside the waistband, and leave the cap at home.
Which colours read smart?
Flat, deep and tonal. Navy, charcoal, black, chocolate, olive and stone read as clothing first and sportswear second, and they take a coat well. Colour-blocked panels and white piping do the opposite. Matching the two halves exactly is what makes a set look deliberate, the same principle as any co-ord, covered in how to wear a matching set.
Where a dressed-up tracksuit works
With leather shoes and an overcoat it is comfortable at dinner, in a bar, at a gallery, on a long flight and in most creative offices. It is not right for black tie, a formal wedding, a funeral, or an interview where everyone else will be in a suit. The garment has elastic at both ends, and in the wrong room that is all anyone sees.
The track jacket in 2026
The clearest change is that the track jacket is increasingly worn loose from the tracksuit. It is worn as a separate piece, over straight jeans, wide trousers, or tailored trousers with a shirt underneath, where a light blazer used to sit. That splits it in two.
One is retro and thin, the archive sports top with a stand collar and contrast trim, worn in the football-adjacent way described in our note on blokecore. The other is heavier and quieter: a full-zip jacket in cotton, knitted cotton or wool, no visible branding, cut closer to a cardigan than a warm-up. The second one dresses up, because it takes a coat over it and a shirt under it without reading as sports layers stacked.
If you are buying one as a separate, check that the collar stands on its own when the zip is closed, that the hem sits at the hip, and that the sleeve stays put when your arm goes up.
