The best Canadian streetwear brands

The best Canadian streetwear brands are OVO from Toronto, Dime from Montreal, and Reigning Champ, Wings+Horns and Arc'teryx from Vancouver, with Peace Collective, Naked & Famous Denim and Mackage close behind, and heritage names such as Roots and Canada Goose sitting underneath the whole scene. Canadian streetwear is less about hype than about three cities with very different habits, and a climate that makes outerwear and heavy fleece more than a style choice.

That split is the most useful way to read the list. Toronto streetwear brands tend to come out of music and city pride. Montreal streetwear leans on skateboarding, denim and sharp outerwear, and the city is also home to the retailer SSENSE. Vancouver is where the heavyweight basics and the technical shells come from. The heritage labels belong to none of these scenes, but streetwear has borrowed from them for years. Each bucket below gives one honest line per brand, so you can go straight to the part of Canada that matches what you already wear.

Toronto streetwear brands

Toronto's labels are tied to the city's music and to its habit of putting its own name on clothes. The two below are the clearest examples, and they could hardly be further apart in scale.

  • OVO, short for October's Very Own, was founded by Drake with Oliver El-Khatib and Noah '40' Shebib, and the clothing grew out of the wider OVO world of music and events. The owl logo is the giveaway, and the range runs from tour-style graphics to quieter fleece and outerwear.
  • Peace Collective was started by Yanal Dhailieh, who first made a few shirts for friends to wear to a Toronto Raptors game, and it grew into a range of city and Canada pride pieces such as Home is Toronto. Part of its profits goes towards school meals for children across Canada.

Montreal streetwear: skate, denim and outerwear

Montreal has a smaller but more self-contained scene, with skateboarding at its centre and a long garment-making tradition behind it. For skate labels from outside Canada, our roundup of the best skate streetwear brands picks up where this section stops.

  • Dime was started by Antoine Asselin and Phil Lavoie as a skate crew making videos before it became a clothing brand, and that sense of humour still runs through the graphics. It has become one of the best-known skate labels to come out of Canada, and its Montreal shop is part of the appeal.
  • Naked & Famous Denim, founded by Brandon Svarc, makes raw and selvedge jeans in Canada with denim woven in Japan, and it has always put the product ahead of celebrity advertising. It is the pick if your streetwear starts from the jeans.
  • Mackage is a Montreal outerwear label from Eran Elfassy and Elisa Dahan, known first for leather jackets and now for sharp, tailored down coats. It sits at the dressier end of this list, but it answers a real Canadian winter.

Vancouver: heavyweight basics and technical outerwear

Vancouver gives Canadian streetwear its two most exported ideas: dense, plain fleece, and mountain-grade shells worn in the city.

  • Reigning Champ was founded in Vancouver by Craig Atkinson and is built around heavyweight fleece: sweatshirts, hoodies and sweatpants with almost no branding. It grew out of CYC Design Corporation, Atkinson's Vancouver garment-making business, which is why the fabric is the point. If that is what draws you in, our guide to the best heavyweight hoodies covers the same ground across more brands.
  • Wings+Horns is Reigning Champ's sister label, also started by Atkinson, after trips between Vancouver and Japan. It takes the same fabric focus into more considered menswear, pairing Canadian materials with a Japanese level of detail.
  • Arc'teryx began in North Vancouver in 1989 as Rock Solid, a climbing company started by Dave Lane, and took the Arc'teryx name in 1991. Its shells were built for the mountains rather than the street, which is exactly why they became central to gorpcore.
  • Haven is a shop first, opened by brothers Arthur and Daniel Chmielewski in Edmonton before they opened in Vancouver, but it also designs its own in-house collection alongside the brands it stocks.

Heritage that streetwear borrowed

These two were never streetwear brands, and they do not need to be. Streetwear simply kept wearing them, and plenty of lists of Canadian clothing brands for streetwear start here for that reason.

  • Roots was founded in Toronto in 1973 by Michael Budman and Don Green, two friends from Detroit who met at summer camp in Algonquin Park. The beaver logo and the grey sweatpants are the parts streetwear picked up, and they still work as plain, comfortable basics.
  • Canada Goose began in Toronto in 1957, when Sam Tick founded Metro Sportswear, the company that later became Canada Goose. Its expedition-style parkas crossed into city wear a long time ago, and the round sleeve patch is as recognisable as any streetwear logo.

A European option: Phrase Studios

Phrase Studios is not Canadian. We are an independent studio in Ghent, Belgium, founded in 2023, and we mention ourselves here only for readers who like Reigning Champ for its heavyweight focus. We work in numbered chapters: small runs of heavyweight cotton that are not restocked, cut in a relaxed unisex fit. You can browse our hoodies and sweatshirts or the embroidered Floral Bloom tracksuit from chapter 04. Because pieces come in small runs and may sell out, The Circle is where the next chapter appears first. For the wider region we come from, see our page on European streetwear brands.

The honest summary is that Canada does not have one streetwear look. Pick Toronto if you want music and city pride, Montreal if you skate or start from denim, and Vancouver if fabric and weather matter more to you than graphics. The heritage names fill the gaps in between. None of these brands needs to be the loudest thing you own, and most of them are better worn that way.

FAQ

What is the most popular Canadian streetwear brand?

OVO is probably the best-known Canadian streetwear brand, largely because of its link with Drake and Toronto. In their own lanes, Reigning Champ is the reference for heavyweight fleece and Arc'teryx for technical outerwear.

What streetwear brands are from Toronto?

OVO and Peace Collective are the clearest Toronto streetwear brands. Roots and Canada Goose were also founded in Toronto and are worn widely in streetwear, although both started as heritage clothing rather than streetwear.

Is Arc'teryx a streetwear brand?

Not originally. Arc'teryx started in North Vancouver as a climbing and outdoor brand, but its technical shells became a core part of streetwear through gorpcore, so it now sits in both worlds.
